mSwitch IMS (IP Multmedia Subsystem)

mSwitch offers IMS-based solutions that can be configured to address the unique needs of each service provider as they deal with the changing competitive landscape and the latest communications trends. The mSwitch End-to-End IMS Solution answers this threat by letting service providers offer interpersonal communication (using web, multimedia, messaging and conversational services), user-experience continuity across devices and networks, instant access anywhere and self-service personalization, and by delivering blended lifestyle services to consumers and enterpriseusers.

Components

UTEX-CS

UTEx-CS is the core subsystem of the mSwitch IMS solution. Thanks for our unified software and hardware design, it is a unified Call Server for SIP subscribers and can play multi roles of IMS, including CSCF(P/I/S), BGCF and MGCF. Designed using a powerful mobile & multi-media NGN/IMS architecture, and bundled with the SLR(HSS), OMC-S(eMS) and mBOSS (billing/provision), the mSwitch UTEx-CS system not only meets the increasing requirements to Next Generation MultiMedia communication network.

Built upon a layered IMS architecture, the UTEX-CS greatly expands the switching capacity and reduces total cost of ownership. The UTStarcom mSwitch UTEX-CS can exert the inherent potential of Telecom IP broadband network.

With integrated capability for both wireless and wired access management, the UTEX-CSCF is the core of the total mSwitch IMS system. It provides a rich set of voice and data communication services to subscribers. The UTEX-CS offers telecom carriers a complete solution to meet the personal mobility challenge of the traditional PSTN network.

UTEX-AS (TELEPHONY APPLICATION SERVER)

The UTStarcom UTEX-AS Converged Telephony Server is a standards-based, highly-scalable IP-multimedia-subsystem(IMS) telephony application server that enables mobile and fixed service providers to differentiate their offerings with enriched high-definition voice and video experiences for business and residential users.

Deploying the UTStarcom TEL AS allows service providers to stimulate further broadband growth, slow down or reduce the churn of high-value broadband customers to competitors, and counter ISP-based VoIP competitors. Multimedia Telephony (MMtel) and GSMA services expedite multimedia Rich Communication Suite (RCS) feature deployment in circuit mobile networks, increasing the average revenue per user.

The main benefits of SIP application server technology are ease of application development, rapid network and centralization. By centralizing business logic on an individual or small number of UTEX-AS SIP application servers, updates and upgrades to the application for all users can be guaranteed. There is no risk of old versions of the application accessing or manipulating data in an older, incompatible manner.

UTEX-iMS (MRF)

The UTStarcom UTEX-iMS lets you offer enhanced IP-based telephony services even as you migrate to a new infrastructure—without disrupting service or subscriber dialing patterns. The MRS’s main role is to feed subscriber media service over IP networks. It functions seamlessly and transparently with the legacy PSTN, providing maximum scalability and cost-efficiency.

As an integral part of the UTStarcom mSwitch IMS product family, the UTEX-iMS delivers distributed, superior voice communication over IP networks. Working in concert with other mSwitch products, the MRS offers an end-to-end packet telephony solution that provides toll-quality voice and enhanced services.

The UTEX-iMS also enhances availability by combining software resiliency and hardware redundancy to create a robust and highly available solution. The UTStarcom MRS has proven itself in the field, servicing billions of minutes of live traffic.

SLR (HSS)

In mSwitch IMS, the SLR play the role of HSS and is located on the call control layer, it perform functions such as profile management, authentication, authorization, address translation, route resolution and services profile. Meanwhile, SLR also implements functionalities of ENUM/DNS server of IMS network.

This SLR is combination of 3G HLR+4G HSS, which is one of the most comprehensive on the market with all recent 3GPP standards, integrating all the MAP services defined for HLR and all S6a/Diameter for HSS 4G with a common AuC and a common Data Base of subscriber profiles. For 3G, it includes a full USSD server for customer usage alerts on costs and usage.

Core Network Dynamics’ HSS is a stateless highly scalable solution providing standard compliant interfaces and acting as a front-end for a repository or database storing subscriber data.

Data is stored in either a dedicated database or repository or even integrating with existing data storages supporting standard technologies.

Major features include:

  • LTE, IMS and WiFi Authentication and Authorization in 3G, LTE, IMS and WiFi networks.
  • All interfaces and latest features from standards as well as easily customizable .
  • Simple user data provisioning and management tools are provided (Web, CLI, REST API)

Session Border Controller (SBC)

The mSwitch SBC is a market-leading, Intelligent Session Border Controller for fixed, mobile, cable, and Over-the-Top operators and enterprises. Deployed worldwide and operating in some of the world’s largest IP networks, the SBC provides industry-leading scale, security, session management, policy control, and deployment flexibility to enable seamless SIP Trunking, Peering, Intra-Network Interconnect, Multimedia Communication and RCS solutions in IMS LTE and IMS networks.

The mSwitch SBC has smart management technology that reduces operational complexity and simplifies the network edge by securely managing, routing, and controlling real-time voice and multimedia sessions, while providing intelligent insight into network performance. With the SBC, operators gain predictability and assurance to the delivery of secure rich multimedia services. Through its adaptive security, insightful policy enforcement, flexible interworking and normalization, and advanced session routing capabilities, the SBC adds an unparalleled layer of intelligence in managing SIP and other IP-based voice and multimedia sessions.

UTEX-BGCF (BGCF)

UTEX-BGCF is the core subsystem of the UTStarcom mSwitch IMS solution. It is a unified CallServer for FTTx, SIP, LTE and VoIP subscribers. Designed using a powerful mobile & multi-media software architecture, and bundled with the HSS, OMC-S and mBOSS, the mSwitch UTEX-BGCF system not only meets the increasing requirements for wireless communication, but it also provide a smooth migration path to the next generation communication network.

With integrated capability for both wireless and wired access management, the UTEX-BGCF is one core component of the total mSwitch IMS system. As a carrier-class BGCF, UTEX-BGCF works with the CSCF to route the call to peering IMS network or PSTN network. It will also select which MGCF to use if call is routed to PSTN/PLMN. UTEX-BGCF has build-in CAP/INAP supporting so that it can play role of SSF to interwork with IN SCP.

UTEX-MGCF (MGCF)

UTEX-MGCF is the core subsystem of the UTSTARCOM IMS solution. It is a unified CallServer for FTTx, V5, PSTN/PLMN and VoIP subscribers. The mSwitch UTEX-MGCF system not only meets the increasing requirements for wireless communication, but it also provide a smooth migration path to the next generation communication network.

Built upon a layered IMS architecture, the UTEX-MGCF greatly expands the switching capacity and reduces total cost of ownership. The UTSTARCOM mSwitch UTEX-MGCF can exert the inherent potential of Telecom IP broadband network.

UTEX-MGCF can play the role and MGCF, which is a gateway between IMS and PSTN/PLMN network. With the strong supporting of legacy protocols and service, UTEX-MGCF can make the legacy system to connecting to IMS possible, like the legacy PRI PBX.

Prepaid Service Center (PSC)

In an Operation Support System (OSS), the Prepaid Service Center (PSC) is responsible for Call Detail Record (CDR) collection, storing, pricing, and call control functions. The PSC supports both local OSS systems and also centralized OSS systems. In the different networking applications, the PSC might take the following roles:

  • CDR collector and CDR pricing center 
  • CDR collector 
  • CDR collector which will forward CDRs to a third-party pricing center

mSwitch LI (LI SERVER & GW)

mSwitch LI system is composed by LI SERVER and LI Gateway, they provides LEA/LEMF with ETSI standard ES 102 232 compliant external interfaces:

  • HI1 for target management,
  • HI2 for Intercepted Related Information (IRI) delivery,
  • HI3 for Content of Communication (CC) delivery.

Network Attachment Sub-System (NASS)

The UTStarcom mSwitch Network Attachment Sub-System (NASS) is a flexible, modular and pre-integrated subscriber and policy management solution. The NASS enables service providers to deliver innovative services such as IMS, data, video on-demand and VoIP to their existing customer base, as well as attract new customers. The NASS enables end users to control and personalize their residential services to meet their lifestyle while optimizing their budget.

The mSwitch NASS is instrumental in the cost-effective and timely delivery of next-generation IP-based services and emerging IP multimedia services to a mass market, while enabling a personalized and seamless user experience across all services in a bundle. On-demand subscriber self-service portals and network policy auto-generation allow service providers to minimize operating costs by employing a flexible, zero-touch delivery service model that can cater to individual subscriber preferences and evolving service needs.

The UTStarcom NASS plays a key role in main three aspects of residential service delivery:

  • Network access control – Authenticates subscriber device, manages IP address and subscriber location information
  • Dynamic service control – Manages rules that automate the computation of the network resources required to support the subscriber’s personalized multimedia service mix and that govern the dynamic modifications of these services
  • Service admission control – Accepts/denies on-demand application requests based on rules for revenue priority, time-of-day and bandwidth availability

Element Management System (OMC-S)

mSwitch Operation Management Center --Switching (OMC-S) is a management subsystem that manages all core network devices used in mSwitch IMS, covering network management layer and network entity (NE) management layer in TMN. It is designed with html and Java-swing GUIs to implement various functions needed in network and NE management, such as configuration, fault, performance, security, operation and maintenance, as well as the management for NMS itself.
The OMC-S can manage the following NEs:

  • NEs at the service control layer: P-I-S-CSCF, MGCF, BGCF, ENUM/DNS, TEL AS, MRS and so on. 
  • Core network NEs and terminals: SBC, SWITCH, FIREWALL, IP terminals. 
  • Servers in mBOSS (such as PSC, AC, SAM, OBS, CSS and so on) 
  • NEs in OMC-S itself, including OMC-S Server, OMC-S Client, and so on.
Features

High reliability

The IMS solution is based on the next-generation standard telecom hardware platform ATCA, which is widely recognized in the industry. It supports layered reliability solutions at the board level, network level and application level, including active/standby redundancy, load sharing, and geographical redundancy.

Multiple access modes

The IMS solution supports various access modes, including:

  • xDSL and POTS through DSLAM, MSAN, and LAN
  • UMTS/GPRS and CDMA2000 terminal access through GGSN and PDSN
  • Other mobile terminal access through WLAN, LTE, and WiMAX
  • VoLTE

Advanced security mechanism

The IMS solution supports various security mechanism, including:

  • Access security: support IMS AKA/HTTP Digest/Early IMS/NBA, TLS/IPSEC
  • Signaling Security: support SIP over TLS 
  • Media Security: support encrypted RTP media 
  • Operation and Maintenance security; it secures operation and maintenance with the use of data back and such technologies as SSH, ACL, IPSEC, and SSH
